Medical ID bracelet · engraving guide
Four short lines that speak for you
A medical ID bracelet only has room for a few words, and the person reading it may be scared, in a hurry, or a paramedic kneeling beside you. Here is what to put first, how to word it so it is understood, and how to fit the rest with a QR code.

What to put first, in this order
- The condition a stranger can’t see: epilepsy, type 1 diabetes, a severe allergy, blood thinners, a pacemaker.
- Your allergies, by name: “Allergy: penicillin, nuts” helps far more than “Allergies”.
- A medicine that changes how you are treated, such as insulin or a blood thinner.
- One emergency number with the country code, for someone who answers day and night.
- Your first name, if there is room: it helps a helper reassure you.
Examples that fit on a tag
The phone numbers above are fictional examples.
How to word it so it is understood
- Plain words a stranger knows: “DIABETIC” is clearer than “T1D”, “HEART RHYTHM PROBLEM” clearer than “AF”.
- Put “ICE” (in case of emergency) before the number, and the country code if you travel.
- One idea per line, in capitals: it is easier to read on a small, curved surface.
- Ask your doctor or nurse to check the wording before you order: you only get a few words.
When it doesn’t fit: add a QR code
Engraving gives the essentials at a glance and never needs a phone. A QR code sticker or tag next to it can carry the rest: several contacts, your medicines, and first-aid steps written for the person helping. You can make one here for free, in a few minutes, with nothing stored online.
Where to wear it
- On the wrist or around the neck, where people helping usually look first.
- A wallet card and the medical ID on your phone are good extras, not replacements: they are not always found.
- For children, a soft band or a shoe tag they won’t take off.
Questions
Should I put my name on a medical ID bracelet?
It helps a helper reassure you and call you by name. For a child, a first name is enough.
Should I engrave my address?
No. A phone number reaches your family faster and keeps your address private.
What does ICE mean on a medical ID?
In case of emergency. Writing ICE before a phone number tells people who to call.
Can I put a QR code on a medical ID bracelet?
Yes. Print it on a waterproof sticker for a blank tag, or keep a short engraving and add a QR tag next to it. You can make the code here for free.
